The complex geological history of Ethiopia is represented in three major geological terrains.

(i) The Proterozoic basement rocks;

(ii) Mesozoic and Cenozoic continental and marine sediments;.

(iii) Cenozoic and Tertiary volcanic and sedimentary rocks that are related to the East African Rift Valley system;
