May

Cunard Yanks - John Winter

At our May Speaker Meeting, John Winter talked about his book ‘Cunard Yanks’. These were British men, mostly young, who worked on Cunard ships from the 1940s to the early 1960s on the transatlantic routes, mainly between Liverpool and New York.

April

The Voice of Anfield

The April Speaker Meeting was another full house, and I thank you all for your support. A special thank you to the ‘Toffees’ for turning up too, 'hats off' to you. It was good to see so many people turn up regardless of whether footie fans or not, you came to listen to ‘The Voice of Anfield’ George Sephton and his long career as Stadium Announcer at LFC, and were not disappointed. George had so many stories to tell, some funny and some sad, and he captivated the audience with his obvious gratitude to the career he loves. Again, I thank you all for your support.

March

Restoration of The Danny (the Daniel Adamson Steam Tugboat)

The March Speaker Meeting welcomed Stuart Wood and Bob Cannell from the Daniel Adamson Preservation Society who gave a superb presentation about the Restoration of the Danny (the Daniel Adamson Steam tugboat) to a huge audience.

Dedicated, enthusiastic volunteers from the ‘Daniel Adamson Preservation Society’ told the remarkable story of the Danny, "The Tug that Survived to Sail Again".

The Daniel Adamson is a coal-fired steam tug tender launched in 1903 from the golden age of British engineering and it had a career ranging from towing humble barges to entertaining Kings and Queens in the Art Deco Lounge on the famous Manchester Ship Canal.

Sadly, after a working life of over 80 years, she was abandoned and destined for the scrap yard.

It is amazing to learn that at the 11th hour in 2004 she was rescued by a dedicated group of volunteers and after many trials and tribulations was returned to her former working glory, sailing the waterways of the Northwest for the enjoyment of all.

February

The Great American Songbook

Our ‘Speaker Meeting’ on 13th February was a resounding success, we had a full house to listen to the wonderful Roger Browne tell his story of ‘The Great American Songbook’. He filled the room with his huge personality, amazing singing voice and his remarkably interesting and funny anecdotes of the many people he has met and worked with during his incredible career in the world of ‘Jazz Music.’ We also were lucky to have had an impromptu visit and songs from Roy, who sang with some of the great jazz bands in his musical career. He joined Roger sing and had everyone foot tapping and singing along.

They have both agreed to revisit us next year…..watch this space and keep on attending our ‘Speaker Meetings’ for our future enjoyable events.
